| Q: | Is there a formula for ranging with a mil-dot reticle? |
| A: | Yes. Height or width of object in inches * 27.778 divided by mil dot size of target = range in yds. |
| Q: | What is the effective range of a .308 cal rifle? |
| A: | The .308 cal performs best at ranges out to 800 yds. They are often shot to 1000 yds but lack energy for clean kills on large game at that range |
| Q: | What is an FFP reticle? |
| A: |
An FFP reticle = first focal plane - they range accurately at any power.
An SFP type reticle = second focal plane - only ranges at one given power - most range at 10 power. |
| Q: | What type of scope would you recommend for all round use? I plan to use it on a Ruger m77 in 300 Win-Mag. |
| A: | You get what you pay for. Buy the best you can afford. There is no substitute for good optics. Funds permitting, I would go with a Nightforce or Leupold 3x9 or 4x12 and a mildot reticle would be a must. |
| Q: | Are there any advantages to Moly coated bullets? Everyone I ask has a different opinion. |
| A: | Opinions are seldom backed by facts. Moly, for the most part, has proven to extend barrel life and make cleaning easier and less frequent. Moly bullets produce a decrease in chamber pressure therefore reducing velocities which in turn changes the point of impact. There is no proof Moly bullets are more accurate than uncoated bullets. Do you need it? You decide. |
| Q: | How much more velocity will I get by putting 28 inches barrel on my rifle? It has a 24 inch barrel on it now, and it is chambered in 30.06. |
| A: | You should get between 25fps to 40fps for every inch barrel over 24 inches. |
| Q: | What type of action would you recommend I use to have a rifle built on? |
| A: | There are several good ones but the most common used in custom rifles is the Remington 700. It's a good action with a huge selection of easy to install after market parts and accessories. |
